Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The ex-president was convicted of orchestrating a military coup in September and given more than over two decades in incarceration, but he was staying under confinement pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a precautionary step after fresh information came to light.

This involved trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the arrest, the judge said intelligence from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's plan to remove the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his escape.
